Travel Agent vs Travel Club: What’s the Difference?

If you spend any time on Facebook or Instagram, you’ve probably seen posts promising things like:
👉 “I don’t quote anymore.”
👉 “I get paid daily.”
👉 “The travel agent world is saturated.”
👉 “I get free trips.”

Sounds dreamy, right? But what’s really going on here? Let’s break down the difference between being a travel agent and joining a travel club, and clear up a few myths along the way.

What Is a Travel Agent?

A travel agent (through a host agency, for example) is an independent business owner who:

  • Works directly with travel suppliers like airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators.

  • Researches, quotes, and books real trips for clients.

  • Earns commission from suppliers once the client has travelled (usually weeks or months after).

Pros of being a travel agent:
Build your own brand and reputation.
✨ Access to training, supplier perks, and fam trips.
✨ Flexibility to work around family and lifestyle.
✨ Genuine repeat business from happy clients.

Cons:
Quoting takes time and effort.
⚡ Commissions aren’t instant — they arrive after travel.

But here’s the thing: those who put in the work are seeing huge results. ITAs and independent agents across the industry are still booking record numbers of holidays. Travel isn’t saturated — it’s thriving.

What Is a Travel Club?

Travel clubs are membership-based schemes that give you access to:

  • Discounted booking portals for hotels, flights, cruises, etc.

  • “Travel points” or credits you can redeem against trips.

  • The option to earn money by recruiting others to join.

Some clubs are straightforward — pay a fee, get access to discounts. Others are multi-level marketing (MLM) style, where your income comes mainly from recruiting a team rather than booking holidays.

Pros of a travel club:
Easy entry, often cheaper than setting up as an agent.
✨ Discounts on your own travel if you use them well.
✨ No quoting for clients if that’s not your thing.

Cons:
The real money usually comes from recruitment, not travel.
⚡ Savings aren’t always better than public booking sites.
⚡ Feels more like network marketing than being a travel professional.

So yes — you might get “daily pay,” but that’s almost always recruitment bonuses, not supplier commissions. And those “free trips”? Often heavily discounted fam trips or incentives, not freebies.

The “Saturation” Myth

One phrase that pops up a lot is: “The travel agent world is saturated.”

Let’s be honest: if you couldn’t stand out, it will feel saturated. But that’s not the industry’s fault — that’s a lack of entrepreneurial spark.

The reality? Travel is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world. Families, groups, solo travellers — people are spending more on experiences than ever before. Independent travel agents are still thriving, and those who put their own spin on their business are seeing incredible success.

Which Model Fits You?

It all comes down to what you want:

💼 If you want to build a real travel business — create a brand, serve clients, and earn commission on actual trips — then being a travel agent through a host agency is the path for you.

🎟 If you prefer a membership-style model, don’t want to quote for clients, and don’t mind focusing on recruitment to earn, then a travel club might suit you better.

Neither option is “wrong” — but they’re very different. One is about selling travel. The other is about selling memberships. Know the difference before you dive in.

Final Thoughts

For me, being an independent travel agent ticks all the boxes: freedom, flexibility, and the chance to turn a passion into a business I can be proud of. It takes effort, yes, but quoting and client care are exactly what build trust and loyalty.

So next time you see someone shouting about daily pay and free trips, remember: if it sounds too good to be true… it probably is.
