3 Ways to Turn Travel into a Side Hustle (and Why You Don’t Have to Pick Just One)

Let’s be honest — we all know someone who spends hours trawling Skyscanner or Expedia, feeling like a hero when they save £30 on a flight.

But here’s the secret: what if you could get paid for doing that… not just for yourself, but for others too?

That’s exactly what I discovered when I stumbled into the travel industry. What started as “how can I save money?” quickly turned into “hang on… people will pay me to do this?”

And the truth is, there isn’t just one way to profit from your love of travel. You’ve actually got three doors you can walk through — and they don’t cancel each other out. In fact, if you want to maximise your earnings, you can open all three.

The Affiliate

This one’s the easiest to start with.

What it looks like:

You recommend travel tools, booking sites, or even experiences. When someone books through your special link, you get a commission.

Why it works:

People already ask you, “Where did you find that deal?” or “What site do you use?” Instead of giving away free recommendations, you can share your affiliate link and earn while helping.

Pros:

  • Low barrier to entry.

  • No customer service (you’re not responsible for the booking itself).

  • Works globally — you can earn while you sleep.

Cons:

  • Commission per booking can be small unless you build volume.

  • Limited control — you’re tied to the affiliate partner’s system.

👉 Perfect if you’re already on social media, love sharing hacks, or want a totally flexible income stream.

The Travel Planning Concierge

This is where your skills and personal touch come in.

What it looks like:

People pay you a fee to do the digging for them — find the flight hacks, compare hotels, design the itinerary, sort out the transfers, suggest local gems. You’re their go-to travel fixer.

Why it works:

Not everyone has time (or patience) to spend hours comparing tabs. People will happily pay to have it done, especially if you can save them stress and money.

Pros:

  • You set your own fee.

  • Builds stronger relationships (clients often come back).

  • You get to flex your creativity — think of it like being a travel stylist.

Cons:

  • You are the point of contact (expect some back-and-forth).

  • Income depends on how many clients you take on.

👉 Perfect if you’re detail-oriented, love planning, or enjoy being the friend everyone comes to for recommendations.

The Travel Agent

The classic — but with a modern twist.

What it looks like:

You join a host agency (like I did) and get access to industry tools. When you book flights, hotels, cruises, or packages, you earn the built-in commission the booking sites normally keep.

Why it works:

Travel is a trillion-dollar industry. People are booking anyway — you’re simply redirecting that money into your pocket.

Pros:

  • Access to exclusive rates, perks, and industry events.

  • Commission is often higher than affiliate alone.

  • You can brand yourself as a professional.

Cons:

  • Requires training and a little upfront effort to learn the systems.

  • You’ll need to be consistent in promoting yourself.

👉 Perfect if you want the credibility of being in the industry and love the idea of travel paying you back.

Why Pick Just One?

Here’s the reality of it... you don’t have to choose.

Imagine this combo:

  • You share affiliate links for the tools you use → passive income.

  • You charge concierge fees for personalised planning → service income.

  • You earn agent commission when you book the trip → industry income.

Three streams. One passion. And the best bit? You can start small and build layer by layer.

Your Next Step

If any of this has you thinking “I could do that”, you’re right. You can.

The only question is:

👉 Do you want to dip your toes in with affiliate links?

👉 Or go all-in and explore becoming a travel agent with full perks and commissions?

👉 Or maybe a mix of all three?
